Exterior House Repaint – Montagu Street, New Town

Introduction

This project involved a complete exterior repaint of a beautiful weatherboard home in Montagu Street, New Town.

Like many of Hobart's older homes, years of weather exposure had left the paint faded and timber beginning to deteriorate. Our goal was to restore the home while providing a durable finish that will protect it for years to come. New Town's mix of heritage and character homes often requires extensive preparation before painting, and this project was no exception.

The Challenge

When we arrived, the existing paint system had begun to fail in several areas. The weatherboards required extensive scraping, sanding and filling before repainting, while gaps around trims and joints needed fresh caulking to help prevent future moisture ingress.

Due to the height and design of this heritage home, full scaffolding was required to provide safe access and ensure every section of the exterior could be properly prepared and painted to a high standard.

Our Preparation Process
  • Paint stripping where required to remove failing coating
  • Scraping all peeling paint
  • Sanding weatherboards and trims
  • Filling damaged timber
  • Premium exterior gap sealing and caulking
  • Full exterior primer coat to create a uniform, long-lasting foundation
  • Two finish coats of premium exterior paint
The Finished Result

The completed transformation gave this heritage weatherboard home a fresh new lease on life. Every stage of the project—from paint stripping and extensive preparation through to the full exterior primer and premium topcoats—was carried out with longevity in mind.

The result is a smooth, uniform finish that complements the home's original character while providing exceptional protection against Hobart's harsh sun, wind and rain. With the preparation done properly, the homeowners can expect a finish that not only looks outstanding but is built to last.

Why Preparation Matters

Many exterior paint jobs fail because preparation is rushed. At Wolfe's Painting, we believe the majority of a quality paint job happens before the first finish coat is applied. Proper scraping, sanding, filling and priming ensures the paint bonds correctly and dramatically improves its lifespan.
